The Ultimate Kilimanjaro Packing List
Packing correctly for Kilimanjaro is crucial for your comfort and safety. You'll experience five climate zones from tropical to arctic, so layering is key.
Clothing Layers
Base Layer (Next to Skin):
- 3-4 moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirts
- 2-3 moisture-wicking pants/leggings
- 4-5 pairs of hiking socks (wool or synthetic)
- Underwear and sports bras
Mid Layer (Insulation):
- Fleece jacket or pullover
- Soft-shell jacket
- Insulated down or synthetic jacket
- Fleece or insulated pants
Outer Layer (Weather Protection):
- Waterproof, breathable rain jacket (essential!)
- Waterproof rain pants
- Waterproof gloves and warm gloves
- Warm hat that covers ears
- Sun hat with brim
Footwear
- Hiking boots: Waterproof, broken in, ankle support
- Camp shoes: Lightweight shoes or sandals for evening
- Gaiters: Keep snow/scree out of boots
Essential Gear
- Sleeping bag rated to -10°C/15°F (can be rented)
- Sleeping pad (provided, but bring your own if preferred)
- Headlamp with extra batteries
- Trekking poles (highly recommended)
- Daypack (30-35L for summit day)
- Duffel bag for porters to carry (provided)

- Sunscreen (SPF 50+) and lip balm
- Sunglasses (UV protection)
- Water bottles or hydration system (3L capacity total)

Weight Limit
Porters can carry up to 15kg (33lbs) of your gear, excluding your daypack which you carry yourself.
