The Marangu Route, also known as the "Coca-Cola Route", is the oldest and most established route on Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers hut accommodation instead of camping. This 5-day option is the shortest route to the summit, making it popular but also challenging due to less acclimatization time.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your Kilimanjaro journey begins at Marangu Gate (1,860m), the most developed entrance on the mountain. After registration formalities, begin trekking through dense montane rainforest. The well-maintained trail climbs gradually through beautiful forest rich with colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and diverse birdlife. The lush vegetation and filtered sunlight create a magical atmosphere. Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) after 4-5 hours. The hut complex offers dormitory-style accommodation with dining facilities and even solar-powered lighting.

Leave the forest zone and climb into moorland characterized by giant heather and volcanic landscape. The trail emerges from tree cover and the views open dramatically. You can see both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks ahead. Cross the high moorland with increasingly sparse vegetation as altitude increases. The landscape becomes more alpine and exposed. Reach Horombo Hut (3,720m) after 5-7 hours. This large hut complex sits on an expansive plateau with spectacular 360-degree mountain views. The sunset and sunrise from here are unforgettable.

Trek across the famous "saddle," the high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. All vegetation disappears completely as you enter the lunar landscape of volcanic scree and rock. The terrain is barren and otherworldly. Views are spectacular in all directions but the altitude becomes very noticeable - walk slowly and breathe deeply. Reach Kibo Hut (4,700m) after 5-7 hours at the base of Kibo's summit cone. The basic stone hut provides shelter. This is your highest camp before summit attempt. Rest thoroughly, hydrate constantly, check all equipment, eat early dinner, and try to sleep before the midnight summit departure.

Summit day begins around midnight with the climb toward Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. The ascent through steep scree is extremely challenging - the altitude makes every step difficult and the cold can be intense. Mental determination is as important as physical strength. Reach Gilman's Point as the sun rises, revealing spectacular views of the crater, glaciers, and the dawn sky. From here, continue along the crater rim for the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Standing on the Roof of Africa is an indescribable feeling of achievement. After summit photos and celebration, begin the long descent back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m). This 11-16 hour day is one of the most challenging treks you'll ever do, covering both the summit and a major descent.

Summit Day Tips

  • Start very early (midnight to 2 AM)
  • Dress in warm layers
  • Bring headlamp with extra batteries
  • Stay hydrated and maintain slow, steady pace

The final day is a long but straightforward descent back to civilization. Trek through moorland as you retrace your steps from day 2, stopping at Mandara Hut (2,700m) for a lunch break. From Mandara, continue through the increasingly lush rainforest. The forest comes alive with birds and monkeys - a stark and welcome contrast to the barren summit zone. The air becomes noticeably warmer and richer in oxygen. The trail can be muddy and slippery especially after rain, so trekking poles are helpful. Arrive at Marangu Gate (1,860m) after 5-7 hours total trekking. Sign out at the gate and receive your summit certificate - gold for reaching Uhuru Peak, green for Stella or Gilman's Point. Your driver will be waiting to transport you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved hot shower, celebration meal, and rest.

Why Choose 5 Days?

    Considerations

Ready to book the 5-day itinerary?

      Expert Tip

For first-time climbers, we strongly recommend the 7 or 8-day itinerary. The extra acclimatization time significantly increases your chances of reaching the summit and makes the experience more enjoyable. The 6-day option is better suited for experienced high-altitude trekkers.

Why Our Success Rates Are Higher

      Optimal Acclimatization

Our itineraries are designed for maximum acclimatization, with gradual altitude gain and strategic rest days.

      Experienced Guides

All our guides have 7+ years of experience and undergo regular training in wilderness first aid and high-altitude medicine.

      Superior Equipment

We provide high-quality camping equipment, emergency oxygen, and comprehensive medical kits on every climb.

      Twice-Daily Health Checks

Our guides monitor oxygen saturation and vital signs twice daily to catch altitude issues early.

      Nutritious Meals

Our mountain cooks prepare fresh, high-calorie meals to keep your energy levels up and support acclimatization.

      Flexible Pacing

We maintain the "pole pole" (slowly, slowly) philosophy, allowing your body time to adapt to the altitude.

      ⚠️Important Note

Why the 8-day option has a slightly lower success rate: The reason lies in the type of climbers it attracts. Many trained hikers choose the 6-day trek and, thanks to their skills, reach the summit despite the greater difficulty. In contrast, the 8-day trek is popular among beginners with no trekking experience at high altitudes. This lack of experience makes the climb more challenging for them, even on the route option that offers a better acclimatization profile.
