About Oldoinyo Lengai

Oldoinyo Lengai, meaning "Mountain of God" in Maasai, is an active volcano at 2,962 meters (9,718 feet). It's the only active volcano in Tanzania and one of the few in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. This challenging climb offers a unique experience with stunning sunrise views over the Rift Valley and Lake Natron.

The Climb

The climb is challenging due to steep, loose volcanic rock and ash. Most climbers start around midnight to reach the summit for sunrise. The descent can be even more challenging due to loose footing.

Difficulty

This is a challenging climb. The terrain is steep with loose volcanic rock and ash. Good physical fitness, experience with challenging terrain, and proper equipment are essential.

Best Time

Dry season (June-October) offers the best conditions. The climb is more challenging during the wet season due to slippery conditions.
